“Every morning on the African plains a gazelle wakes up knowing that to survive she must run faster than the fastest lion. The lion, on the other hand, must run faster than the slowest gazelle or he will go to sleep hungry or even starve.”
More and more, it seems people are struggling to find meaning. Successful people are chucking it all, moving to Montana, and “simplifying” their lives–getting back in touch, so to speak. My family and myself is embarking on a major move to Belize, Central America. What is the most meaningful thing that has happened to you in the last 24 hours? How about the last 7 days? Pause a moment to determine your answer.
Meaning happens when, for example, we head down to our seven-year-old’s bedroom in the evening and grab a book and read a bedtime story with Oscar-worthy enthusiasm and animation. Meaning happens when we finish a piece of furniture as if we were to present it to God for approval. Meaning happens when we give it our best effort, when we wrestle more out of us than we knew we had. Too many of us are living two feet beneath our ceiling. But when we put out extraordinary effort, we climb through our imaginary ceiling of limitations and view our surroundings from the rooftop. When we settle for comfortable predictableness, we trade away the jubilant excitement of the unknown.
